Carreras de Caballos de Sanlúcar de Barrameda 2026 to be held in August 8, 9, 10 and 21, 22, 23.
The dates are now confirmed for one of southern Spain’s most distinctive summer traditions: the Carreras de Caballos de Sanlúcar de Barrameda will return to the beach in August 2026, continuing a ritual that has shaped local summers for generations.
Following its latest board meeting, the Real Sociedad de Carreras de Caballos de Sanlúcar de Barrameda has approved the full calendar for the 2026 season. As is customary, the racing will be divided into two three-day cycles, both scheduled around the August tides. The first cycle will take place on 8, 9 and 10 August, followed by a second cycle on 21, 22 and 23 August.
Tides, rather than convenience, dictate everything here. The races must coincide with a generous low tide, when the sand along the shoreline is wide, compact, and safe enough for thoroughbreds to race at speed. When conditions align, the beach becomes a natural racecourse, framed by the mouth of the Guadalquivir River and the distant outline of Doñana across the water. It’s a setting that feels improvised yet deeply intentional.
Planning for the season is already underway. The organising committee is working on sponsorship agreements and logistical details to ensure a solid and well-supported programme, in keeping with the scale and reputation of the event. After nearly two centuries, the balance between tradition and modern organisation remains delicate — and essential.
For the eleventh consecutive year, Loterías y Apuestas del Estado (LAE) has included the Sanlúcar races in Spain’s national external horse-betting calendar, alongside established racecourses such as Madrid, San Sebastián and Dos Hermanas. In 2026, the official Lototurf betting day will take place on 21 August, the opening day of the second cycle.
This summer will also mark the 181st edition of the races, officially recognised as a Festival of International Tourist Interest. That label feels earned, but the real appeal lies elsewhere — in the way locals and visitors drift down to the sand at dusk, shoes in hand, as hooves cut across the shoreline and the light softens over the estuary.
