Programme & What to Expect This Week

From Thursday 28 May to Sunday 31 May, one of Chipiona’s most traditional celebrations returns as the Romería de Nuestra Señora de Regla del Pinar 2026 takes place across town and in the pine forest (Pinar de la Villa).

For visitors staying in Costa Ballena, this is a chance to experience a very local side of Andalucía just a short drive away. Unlike the larger ferias, the Romería del Pinar feels more intimate and community-focused — part religious tradition, part countryside gathering, and very much part of local life in Chipiona.

If you enjoy authentic local events, horses, flamenco dresses, decorated wagons, and traditional Andalusian atmosphere, this is one of the most interesting cultural outings happening nearby this week.

Thursday to Sunday: The Romería Programme

Thursday 28 May – The Virgin’s Transfer to Chipiona

The celebrations begin at 20:00, when the image of Nuestra Señora de Regla del Pinar is transferred from the chapel in the pine forest to the Santuario de Regla.

This is a quieter and more emotional moment of the celebration, popular with locals and a good option for visitors who prefer a more traditional atmosphere without large crowds.

Friday 29 May – Floral Offering

At 18:00, the traditional floral offering takes place at the Humilladero, one of Chipiona’s historic religious landmarks near the entrance to town.

Expect flowers, local participation, and a more intimate community feel.

Saturday 30 May – Women’s Day in the Pine Forest

Saturday is known locally as the “Día de la Mujer” (Women’s Day) in the pine forest, with social gatherings taking place in the Pinar de la Villa.

This is more of a local social day than a visitor event, but it offers a glimpse into how closely tied the romería remains to the community.

Sunday 31 May – The Main Day of the Romería

Sunday is the highlight day and the best time for most visitors to go.

The day begins at 09:00 with the Romeros’ Mass at the Santuario de Regla, after which the pilgrimage officially departs toward the pine forest.

This is when the celebration feels most alive. Riders on horseback, decorated wagons, flamenco dresses, music, and groups of families make their way together toward the pines, where the day continues with food, music, and social gatherings under the shade of the trees.

If you only visit one day, make it Sunday morning.

Practical Tips for Visitors from Costa Ballena

The Romería del Pinar is only around 5 minutes by car from Costa Ballena (3km), depending on where you are staying.

A few practical tips:

  • Go early on Sunday if you want to see the procession atmosphere near the Santuario de Regla.
  • Expect local crowds, especially on the main day.
  • Wear comfortable shoes — parts of the event take place around sandy paths and the pine forest.
  • Bring water and sun protection if you plan to stay into the afternoon.

The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, but remember that the romería is first and foremost an important local tradition, so respectful behaviour is appreciated.
