Chipiona Recognised in Nationwide Survey and International Press
Chipiona, one of the neighbouring towns and municipalities that Costa Ballena belongs to, recently earned the title of Spain’s happiest town in a nationwide survey conducted by YouGov for Azucarera, one of the country’s largest sugar producers. This charming coastal community didn’t only impress domestically—it also caught the attention of the British media, with GB News highlighting Chipiona as the best town in Spain to live in, praising its friendly atmosphere, ideal weather, and laid-back lifestyle.
Why Chipiona?
Located on the Costa de la Luz, Chipiona is perhaps best known domestically for its striking beaches, welcoming atmosphere, and an easygoing pace of life. According to the study by YouGov, these factors played a key role in pushing Chipiona to the top spot. The researchers specifically highlighted the town’s warm climate, community spirit, and distinctive philosophy of life — focusing on enjoying the moment and prioritising wellbeing above all.
This appealing lifestyle isn’t just attracting Spaniards. GB News noted the town’s increasing popularity with British expatriates and visitors who appreciate its down-to-earth charm and slower pace compared to busier corners of Spain.
Sun, Sand, and Spain’s Tallest Lighthouse
The town is home to the iconic Chipiona Lighthouse, which stands at an impressive 69 metres, making it the tallest lighthouse in Spain and one of the tallest in Europe. This landmark offers panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean, adding to the town’s visual appeal.
Chipiona’s main beach, Playa de Regla, is another major draw. Extending over a kilometre, this Blue Flag-awarded beach is well-known for its pristine sands, excellent water quality, and amenities catering to visitors of all ages. It encapsulates much of what makes Chipiona special — a peaceful yet lively atmosphere appreciated equally by locals and visitors.
This continuous stretch of golden sand links Chipiona to Costa Ballena and further south to the charming town of Rota — ideal for a long beach walk, a quiet moment by the water, or simply enjoying the rhythm of the waves.
Cultural Charm and Local Heritage
Chipiona also boasts rich local heritage. The Sanctuary of the Virgin of Regla, situated between two of the town’s most popular beaches, houses the patron saint of Chipiona and sits atop the remains of a historic fortress. Other notable sites include the Church of Our Lady of O, the Chapel of Christ of Mercy, and the historic Santa Clara Sanatorium — each adding layers of cultural depth to the seaside town.
Not the Only Gem in Cádiz
Although Chipiona took the top spot in the happiness survey by YouGov, two other towns from Cádiz province — Tarifa and Zahara de los Atunes — also ranked highly, coming in fifth and sixth respectively. Both towns, within easy driving distance from Costa Ballena, were similarly praised for their scenic beauty, welcoming locals, and an indescribable charm that keeps visitors returning year after year.
