A Taste of Rota’s Winemaking Tradition
Nestled in the historic center of Rota, Bodega El Gato has been crafting artisanal wines since 1957. Founded by Juan Martínez Martín-Niño “El Gato”, this family-run winery remains dedicated to traditional winemaking methods, from vineyard to bottle.
A Legacy of Craftsmanship
Bodega El Gato preserves the authentic techniques of the Jerez region, producing a range of distinctive wines, including:
- Fino – A dry, crisp sherry with notes of almonds and sea breeze.
- Oloroso – Aromatic and full-bodied, aged oxidatively for depth.
- Moscatel & Pedro Ximénez – Sweet, luscious wines with rich fruit flavors.
- Tintilla de Rota – A unique local red wine, velvety and expressive.
Their wines are marketed under the “El Mayeto” and “J. Martínez” labels, known for their consistent quality and regional character.
A Journey Through Time
Visitors can explore the last operating bodega in Rota’s historic district, where time seems to stand still. The guided tour includes:
- A look at the small laboratory where quality control takes place.
- The aging barrels, where wines mature under the traditional criaderas y soleras system.
- A vintage bottling machine, still in working condition.
- “La Sacristía”, a special cellar housing the oldest and most treasured vintages.
